Trunchball announces the cast for Matilda Jr.

Our Middle Troupe is stepping into the bold, high-energy world of Matilda Jr., and we are proud to officially announce our casts across multiple productions.

Inspired by Matilda, this musical tells the story of a brilliant young girl who refuses to accept injustice. With courage, intelligence, and imagination, Matilda stands up to the larger-than-life adults around her, including the formidable Trunchbull, while discovering the power of her own voice. It is a story about resilience, kindness, and the impact young people can have when they choose to lead.

About the show and its structure

Matilda Jr. is one of the most ensemble-driven productions in the MTI Jr catalogue. While there are clearly defined principal roles, the show relies heavily on the full company to create its fast-paced, highly physical world. Scenes move quickly, musical numbers demand precision, and the storytelling is layered through movement, vocals, and strong character work.

The ensemble is on stage for a significant portion of the show. They are not waiting in the wings. They are constantly working, constantly creating, and constantly driving the energy forward.

The ensemble is the heartbeat of this production

In this show, the ensemble builds everything. They are the students of Crunchem Hall, the environment, the movement, and the momentum. They carry major musical numbers, execute demanding choreography, and ensure every transition feels seamless and alive.

This requires discipline, focus, and a genuine understanding of ensemble craft. It is often more demanding than a single principal track, because it calls for versatility, stamina, and the ability to stay fully present throughout the entire performance.

We are incredibly proud of the students who have embraced these roles. Being in the ensemble in Matilda Jr. is not a smaller part. It is a position of responsibility and trust. These performers are the engine of the show, and their commitment will directly shape the success of each production.

Understanding the roles

Matilda sits at the centre of the story, requiring emotional depth, clarity, and stamina. Miss Honey provides warmth and grounding, while Trunchbull demands strong physicality and bold character work.

The Wormwood family brings comedic precision and heightened characterisation. Roles like Bruce, Lavender, Amanda, Nigel, Hortensia, and the Big Kids create the student world, each requiring strong individuality while working cohesively as a group.

The Acrobat and Escapologist deliver a parallel narrative thread that requires control, storytelling clarity, and connection. Mrs Phelps supports the narrative structure, while supporting roles such as Rudolpho, Sergi, Eric, Tommy, Alice, and others help shape the pace and texture of the show.

Every role contributes. Every moment matters.
