We are thrilled to announce that CentreStage will be staging the legendary musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum from 18th September to 4th October 2026 at CentreStage Theatre.
Hailed as one of Broadway’s funniest shows, Forum is a fast-paced, farcical romp set in Ancient Rome, featuring mistaken identities, disguises, outrageous physical comedy, and some of the cleverest lyrics ever penned by Stephen Sondheim. It’s big, bold, cheeky—and utterly unforgettable.
"This musical is one of the finest examples of classic comedy with a theatrical heart,” says CentreStage’s Managing Director David Greenwood OAM. “It’s the kind of show that challenges a creative team to think theatrically, cast with precision, and revel in organised chaos. We couldn’t be more excited to bring it to Geelong in 2026.”
A Landmark Musical Comedy
With a book by Burt Shevelove & Larry Gelbart and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum first opened on Broadway in 1962. It won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has since become a benchmark for musical farce. Inspired by the comedies of Roman playwright Plautus, the show is a joyful celebration of classic slapstick humour, wordplay, and theatrical madness.
Featuring the iconic opening number “Comedy Tonight”, the show promises belly laughs, unexpected twists, and an unforgettable night at the theatre.
“It’s fast, fearless, and gloriously funny—but it also requires a production team who knows how to build trust, timing, and texture,” David adds. “We’re looking to build that team now.”
