Why Safety is at the Centre of CentreStage: Our Updated Child Safety Plan

Updated: Jun 6

CentreStage is more than a theatre company. We are educators, mentors, producers, and advocates. We work with hundreds of young people each year across our education programs, mainstage productions, and talent agency. For us, child safety is not a box to tick—it’s a promise we uphold every day.

Our updated Child Safety Plan goes beyond compliance. It aligns with the latest Victorian Child Safe Standards, Wage Inspectorate guidelines, and best-practice principles for working with young people in the performing arts. It is also aligned with our We Are People Plan, reinforcing our core values: We Belong, We Create, We Listen, We Care.

What’s in Our Plan?

  • Clearer Communication Channels – Approved ways to connect with young people and families (no DMs, no unsupervised contact).

  • Emergency Response Framework – Practical steps for crisis situations, medical events, or disclosures.

  • Inclusion and Adjustment Policies – Explicit support for neurodiverse children, students with disability, EAL learners, and young people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

  • Lice, Illness and Attendance Guidance – Health, hygiene and respectful reporting practices.

  • Updated Risk Assessments – Clear protocols for rehearsals, performances, excursions, and after-hours programming.

  • Training Requirements – All staff must complete Child Safety Mandatory Training via the Department of Education and adhere to our internal Code of Conduct.

  • Alignment with Law – Including the Child Employment Act, Worker Screening Act, Children, Youth and Families Act, and more.

We’ve also included new policies around social media use, communication tools (e.g. StudioPro and Seesaw), and a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, discrimination, or any form of harm.

Our Commitment to Advocacy and Leadership

As Managing Director, I’ve seen how safe environments allow young people to shine—not just on stage, but in themselves. Whether a child is auditioning for a major production or taking their very first drama class, they deserve to feel secure, supported, and respected.

Inclusion, safety, and child voice aren’t “add-ons” at CentreStage—they are at the centre of everything we do. This new plan helps ensure that our growth as an organisation is matched by our growth in responsibility, accountability, and care.
