Matilda Jr. Takes the Stage in 2026: A Fantastic Opportunity for Young Performers Aged 8–12

ree

CentreStage’s Middle Troupes will bring one of the world’s most loved musicals to life in 2026, with Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr. set to take over the stage next October and November. Designed specifically for young performers aged 8–12, this production forms part of our 2026 education program – proudly rated Geelong’s Number 1 Musical Theatre Education Program by the Geelong Advertiser.

This is an open-entry program with no audition required, welcoming both new and returning students who are ready to explore musical theatre in a supportive, energising, and professionally guided environment. To join, visit www.centrestage.org.au/satcpaa.

Why Matilda Jr.?

Matilda Jr. is packed with bold characters, witty storytelling, powerful songs by Tim Minchin, and a strong message about courage, creativity, and standing up for what is right. Young performers will have the chance to develop acting, singing, and movement skills while working collaboratively on a high-quality production.

With VIT-registered educators leading the program, students receive industry-informed training that nurtures confidence, teamwork, and stagecraft, all while fostering a love of the performing arts.

David Greenwood, Managing Director of CentreStage, believes Matilda Jr. is the perfect production for emerging performers.

“Matilda Jr. offers a remarkable platform for young people to step into a world of imagination and possibility. This story champions bravery, resilience, and curiosity – qualities we see in our students every day. I’m thrilled that our Middle Troupes will take on such an iconic work in 2026.”

He also emphasises the value of accessible pathways into the arts:

“One of the things I’m most proud of is that our education program remains open to every child. With no audition barrier, we’re ensuring students from all backgrounds can take part, discover their strengths, and feel a sense of belonging on stage.”

And finally, on the community impact:

“Geelong’s young performers deserve opportunities that are grounded in professional standards and strong educational foundations. This production is more than a show – it’s a chance for children to grow, connect, and shine. I can’t wait to see what they create together.”
